Joburg Roads

Two Joburg roads were jam-packed with smiles thanks to simple signs of kindness held up by people on a mission to make Valentine’s Day special for everyone:

Johannesburg, South Africa (15 February 2024) — When it comes to Joburg roads, William Nicole and Republic are known for being traffic hotspots. But on Valentine’s Day morning, they were jam-packed with something a little different to their usual flow—smiles!

From 6:30 am, a team of early ‘love’ birds stood beaming with signs that easily made even the grumpiest motorist’s morning:

“You are needed.”

“You are loved.”

“You are worthy.”

“You are valued.”

“You are you.”

The special signs ignited waving, cheering and great big smiles on those roads as love became a passenger in everyone’s cars. Driving the momentum was community charity One SMALL Act of Kindness—an organisation dedicated to putting the act in impact.

But even more heartwarmingly—and lesser known to those who drove by—the people behind the signs were also people who are not strangers to smiling through the toughest times. Affectionately dubbed the ‘breakfast team’ by OSAOK, the team was comprised of people who usually receive porridge from the charity in the mornings to fill their hungry tummies.

Hoping to spread love and purpose in the same sitting, OSAOK invited the breakfast team to be part of making others smile as a way to remind them of the purpose they can have in the lives of others.

“We gave the guys a purpose to feel like a regular person even just for 2 hours,” OSAOK shared of the special morning, thanking all those who shared in the positive energy.

OSAOK is a charity for everyone, an advocate for the power of purpose—the difference between a ‘hand up’ and a ‘hand out’. By giving the participants a morning to sit in the giver’s seat, the sentiments on the signs echoed even louder.
