Checkers Sixty60 brings humour to the Springboks’ new mint-green “away” kit with a side-splitting Facebook video, adding a minty twist to a rugby fashion controversy.

Johannesburg, South Africa (14 September 2023) – In a hilarious turn of events, Checkers Sixty60 has taken the rugby world by storm with a side-splitting Facebook video that has left fans in stitches.

The subject of their rib-tickling antics? The South African Springboks’ new “away” kit, which just so happens to be a shade of mint green that has sent shockwaves through the world of rugby fashion. So, what’s the story behind this uproarious video, and what’s the deal with the minty-fresh kit? Let’s dive right in!

In a Facebook video that had social media users hitting the ‘share’ button faster than a rugby ball in a scrum, Checkers Sixty60 declared, “It wasn’t us!” as they rolled out their comic take on the Springboks’ kit revelation. But was it really not them?

Glen Biderman-Pam and Ollie Booth from Panther Punch, the creative minds behind this viral sensation, are no strangers to Good Things Guy. They have a knack for seizing trending topics and adding their unique spin to them. From the “Eskom Uncovered Expose” to the “Lockdown Lovestory,” from “Kreepy Teacher” to “Rassie’s Bakery,” their wit and humour have graced our screens before, and this time is no exception.

Where it started

In July 2023, the rugby world collectively raised an eyebrow when the Springboks unveiled their new “away” kit, painted in a surprising shade of mint green. For a team renowned for sporting the iconic green and gold, this deviation from tradition sent fans and social media pundits into a frenzy. But, as with many things in life, there’s more to this minty change than meets the eye.

SA Rugby CEO Rian Oberholzer couldn’t contain his enthusiasm for what Nike had delivered. The team’s feedback on their new minty gear was overwhelmingly positive. Oberholzer explained that the new jersey was designed to pay homage to the Springboks’ rich traditions while introducing subtle nuances to set it apart. The jersey’s design and construction remained faithful to the Springbok legacy, but the colour had undergone a transformation as refreshing as a cold drink on a hot summer’s day.

So, why did the Springboks, known for their green and gold, take a leap into the world of mint?

The answer lies in the desire to be inclusive and accommodating to all rugby fans, including those with colour vision deficiencies. World Rugby, the governing body of international rugby, had introduced a groundbreaking policy aimed at meeting the needs of colourblind and vision-impaired fans. This progressive policy, set to be fully implemented in 2025, had already left its mark on the Rugby World Cup.

During the tournament, teams were asked to temporarily shelve their traditional colours in favour of kits that offered better contrast. The goal was simple: to make it easier for fans with colour vision deficiencies to distinguish between the teams on the field. It was a move towards a more inclusive and fan-friendly game.

While the Springboks embraced this change with open arms and minty jerseys, it ignited passionate debates among South African social media users. Some hailed the mint green kit as a breath of fresh air, symbolizing modernity and adaptation. Others, in their typical humour, playfully suggested that it bore a striking resemblance to the branding of Checkers Sixty60, FNB, or even Listerine.

And Checkers Sixty60 has finally weighed in. Kinda.

In the end, whether you’re a fan of the minty kit or not, there’s one thing we can all agree on – Checkers Sixty60 has once again injected a dose of laughter and levity into our lives with their uproarious take on the Springboks’ new attire. So, kudos to Checkers Sixty60 for keeping the spirit of fun alive in the world of rugby! Watch the video for a good laugh and remember, sometimes a touch of minty freshness can make even the most traditional of things feel brand new.
