Restaurante Parreirinha bids farewell to its historic La Rochelle location, embarking on an exciting new chapter in the vibrant Melrose Arch precinct, preserving its legacy while embracing a brighter future.

Johannesburg, South Africa (13 August 2023) – In a bittersweet announcement that tugs at the heartstrings of many loyal patrons, Restaurante Parreirinha has revealed that it will be bidding farewell to its beloved La Rochelle location after 48 remarkable years.

This iconic eatery, which was established in July 1975 by two brothers-in-law, has grown to become more than just a restaurant; it’s a cherished piece of Johannesburg’s history.

The story of Parreirinha is intertwined with the very fabric of the city. Housed within the walls of what was once the Sixth Street Police Station, the restaurant’s journey mirrors that of the neighbourhood itself. For decades, it has been a gathering place where strangers transformed into lifelong friends. Its walls have echoed with laughter, camaraderie, and the clinking of glasses, making it more than just a dining establishment—it’s a home away from home.

However, times change, and neighbourhoods evolve. La Rochelle, which once embraced Parreirinha as a vibrant community hub, has significantly deteriorated, and the restaurant’s founders and owners, echoing the sentiments of its patrons, acknowledged that the time has come for a new chapter.

In a heartfelt statement, the team recently announced their impending move, expressing both sadness and excitement. While acknowledging the weight of leaving behind a building laden with stories and memories, they also looked forward to a new beginning.

“It has been one of the most difficult decisions we’ve had to make as this building holds so many stories and memories… Parreirinha has never just been a restaurant; it’s a home away from home where total strangers meet and become lifelong friends.”

The next destination? The charming embrace of Melrose Arch – a picturesque precinct that promises to be a perfect canvas for the legacy of Parreirinha.

The Da Cunha family, the custodians of Parreirinha’s legacy, expressed their gratitude to their loyal customers and supporters: “To all our customers and loyal supporters, THANK YOU for the 48 years in La Rochelle… no matter what the future holds, memories can’t be replaced, and so we go on and create new ones.”

Nearly five decades of memories had been etched into the walls of La Rochelle, and those memories would always be carried forward. As they prepare to take this leap, they recognise that change is the essence of life. Yet, the moments, laughter, and friendships that were cultivated in the heart of La Rochelle will forever remain timeless.

The move to Melrose Arch isn’t just about relocating; it’s about preserving the essence while embracing a brighter future.

The new chapter in the “Old Grand Lady of Melrose Arch” will hold new opportunities, new faces, and new memories, all while paying homage to the legacy that was lovingly built in La Rochelle. This transition isn’t just a physical move; it’s an evolution that speaks volumes about the resilience of this establishment and its commitment to providing a dining experience that stands the test of time.

And the response from the community has been overwhelming and positive. Longtime patrons and newcomers alike are excited about the move to Melrose Arch. Many have expressed their understanding of the necessity for change, citing concerns about safety in the original neighbourhood as a driving factor. They eagerly await the chance to continue their culinary journey with Restaurante Parreirinha in its new, more secure home.

As the closing date in La Rochelle approaches in October this year and the opening date in Melrose Arch draws near (in October as well), the anticipation is palpable. A community that was once connected by the charm of La Rochelle will now reunite in the elegant embrace of Melrose Arch. With a heart full of gratitude, the team bids farewell to one chapter while eagerly embracing the next. Memories may be left behind, but the spirit of Parreirinha lives on, stronger than ever, in the heart of Johannesburg.

Obrigado, La Rochelle, for the memories, and cheers to the exciting journey ahead!
