Lipstick

It turns out that Siya Kolisi looks great in lipstick. As do several other South African icons reimagined by talented artist Ricollin Moodley:

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (16 January 2024) — Exploring a new frontier of mediums by merging the worlds of art and beauty is 23-year-old KwaZulu-Natal-based creative Ricollin Moodley. Using a lesser-picked ‘brush’ to create artwork that’ll make you do a double-take, Ricollin has awed South Africans everywhere with his lipstick portraits.

The jury is in, and Siya Kolisi does look great in lipstick (the South African rugby superstar thought so too, sharing great appreciation for the work). As it turns out, lipstick also suits Ben Etzebeth, and Cheslin Kolbe. Rachel Kolisi and breakout pop star Tyla, we might add, have never looked more iconic in their lipstick shades.

But for these portraits, it’s less about the lipstick picks and far more about the guiding hand behind them. Ricollin’s creations have drawn people all over the world in, and undoubtedly given his obvious talent a whole new dimension of appreciation.

Art is great when the rules are perfected. Art is often brilliant, however, when they’re broken.

Going against the grain is something this artist prides himself on. If it’s not lipstick, it’s eyeshadow and other makeup staples (which is how Ricollin reinvented the Mona Lisa). And if it’s not a canvas, it’s upcycling reusable bags into clothes. Or painting with coffee.

Ricollin is certainly on the come-up in his career, and has made South Africa proud in representing our creativity. We can’t wait to see what he cooks up next!

You can keep up with his artwork here.
