A heartwarming video of a playful newborn rhino is captivating the internet and giving us all the feels!

Undisclosed Location (22 January 2024) – Amid the challenges facing rhinos due to poaching, a heartwarming video of a tiny newborn rhino has emerged, bringing joy to social media platforms (while giving us all the feels).

The adorable footage, capturing the rhino calf’s playful antics, has quickly become a sensation, proving that even in the face of adversity, there is always room for uplifting stories.

Shared on TikTok by Lizelle Roos, the video showcases the newborn rhino engaging in mock charging and gleefully jumping around. This endearing behaviour is a natural part of the rhino’s development, as young animals often participate in mock charging as a way to play and explore their surroundings. It is crucial in building strength, coordination, and agility while allowing them to test their physical abilities and learn about the world around them.

To ensure the safety of these precious rhinos, Roos wisely chose not to disclose the location in her post. Despite inquiries from curious viewers, she remained tight-lipped, demonstrating a commendable commitment to protecting these vulnerable creatures from potential harm.

The response from the online community has been overwhelmingly positive, with comments pouring in to express admiration for the playful newborn rhino.

One viewer remarked, “Thank you for posting this. The best thing I’ve seen all year!!!” Another commented on the sheer cuteness of the video, saying, “Wow absolutely beautiful and adorable, he is so playful and cute. Lovely video.”

Poaching is still a problem!

While revelling in the delight inspired by the playful rhino, it remains crucial to recognise the persistent menace of rhino poaching, especially in South Africa. Recent incidents, such as the arrest of U.S. “rhino activist” Derek Lewitton in December, highlight the persistent challenges faced by those working to protect these majestic creatures. Accused of possessing rhino horns and unlawful firearms, Lewitton’s case was postponed to the 7th of March, shedding light on the complexity of addressing the issue.

Just this month, the authorities made significant strides in the fight against rhino poaching.

Notorious rhino poaching syndicate boss Elvis ‘2Bob’ Mhlongo and accomplice Bonginkosi Mvuba were apprehended after a high-speed chase, leading to the discovery of two rhino horns and a rifle in their vehicle. The suspects now face charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of rhino horns without a permit. Tragically, the incident also led to the discovery of a rhino carcass.

While challenges persist, the heartening video of the newborn rhino serves as a reminder of the beauty and resilience of these incredible creatures. By celebrating and sharing such moments, we contribute to a collective effort to raise awareness and support the ongoing conservation initiatives aimed at protecting rhinos for generations to come.
