South African Slang

Putting a hilarious spin on a word we all know and hate to love, a US artist made a song titled after South African for ‘go away’ (voetsek), an ironic honour to her falling in love with SA on a recent trip.

Global (28 May, 2023) — It’s not every day we get to hear a proudly South African slang word reserved for Eskom and out-of-order robots on Spotify, but every day in South Africa is an adventure.

Recently, an artist from the United States was inspired to make a song that ironically honours her love affair with South Africa.

In fact, Nilla Allin got so integrated into South African culture, she even got a South African name, picked by South Africans.

Allin, who has over a million followers on TikTok, documented her entire journey to Cape Town. Sharing everything from learning what loadshedding was to celebrating Freedom Day, created an unexpected bond between the singer and South Africans, and so upon her return, she decided to do something to give Mzansi a laugh.

One social media user asked her to put ‘voetsek’ in a song, and soon the track of the same title was born, and the world got to discover proudly South African slang.

And, if you ever needed proof that South Africans will stand firmly behind those who make us smile, Nilla’s song has already climbed the charts locally on Spotify.

While the lyrics aren’t exactly for South Africans of all ages (if you’ve never heard swearing before, it’s probably not for you), it also includes references to plenty of proudly South African cues including “I’m the light during loadshedding”.

When the world feels like it’s on our case, when we encounter a pothole or the price of fuel goes up, we know which song will help us get our anger out hilariously.

Meanwhile, Allin has also been focused on educating her fellow Americans about loadshedding.

@official.nilla Replying to @chevychase1209 yall.. we had NO IDEA about loadshedding😭😩! But we learning!🤣😂😂 #loadshedding #southafrica ♬ Bill It To The Room – Nilla Allin
