NSPCA inspector’s courageous investigation leads to the conviction of a dog’s axed killer.

Western Cape, South Africa (06 March 2024) – The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) has reason to celebrate as justice has been served in a recent case of egregious animal cruelty.

Norman Tiseco Mothudi, the perpetrator behind a horrifying act of violence against a defenceless dog, has been convicted for his unforgivable actions.

The distressing incident came to light on 01 August 2023 when the NSPCA received a distressing complaint accompanied by a video capturing the heart-wrenching scene of a man mercilessly striking a dog to death with an axe. What made this already horrific act even more appalling was the fact that it unfolded in the presence of a minor child, who was forced to witness the gruesome ordeal while holding the dog on a long rope.

In response to the distressing report, NSPCA Inspector Mpho Mokoena exemplified the true essence of compassion and duty. With unwavering determination, Inspector Mokoena journeyed to Olifantshoek, Northern Cape, where the heinous crime had taken place. There, in the middle of the chilling evidence, Inspector Mokoena conducted a thorough investigation and courageously exhumed the dog’s carcass for a post-mortem examination.

Through meticulous efforts, the perpetrator, Mr Mothudi, was identified, leading to a warranted inspection of his property.

Shockingly, the inspection uncovered not only the cruel killing of the dog but also the deplorable conditions in which another dog, a Boerboel type, was being kept. Reacting swiftly, Inspector Mokoena intervened and seized the suffering animal from its dire circumstances.

The wheels of justice turned decisively on 13 February 2024, as the Kathu Magistrates’ Court delivered its verdict. Mr Mothudi was sentenced to four months imprisonment or a fine of four thousand Rand. Moreover, recognising the severity of his actions, the court declared him unfit to possess a firearm.

“This conviction is a reminder that the NSPCA stands resolute in the face of animal cruelty and that every animal is deserving of our utmost care and protection,” Inspector Mokoena emphasised.

The NSPCA views this conviction as a significant milestone in its ongoing battle against animal cruelty. It is hoped that this verdict will serve as a potent deterrent to those who would consider committing such heinous acts in the future. The NSPCA remains steadfast in its mission to advocate for the humane treatment of all animals and urges the public to seek assistance from their nearest SPCA if they find themselves unable to care for their animals, rather than resorting to inhumane actions.

In celebrating this conviction, we honour not only the memory of the innocent dog whose life was tragically cut short but also the tireless efforts of individuals like Inspector Mpho Mokoena, who champion the cause of compassion and justice for animals.

A Johannesburg mother, concealing her breast cancer diagnosis from her daughter during her grade 11 year, now celebrates life and expresses gratitude after successful treatment by a dedicated multidisciplinary medical team.

Johannesburg, South Africa (01 March 2024) – A mother whose selfless determination to shield her daughter from the news of her breast cancer diagnosis during her child’s grade 11 year is celebrating life with a heart full of gratitude.

“This time last year, the future was uncertain. Many people think of death when they think of cancer, and I did not want the stress about my health to affect my daughter’s academic performance,” says the 50-year-old woman from Johannesburg.

“I tried to hide it, but she is a very smart teenager and, on some level, I think she knew. I also did not want to tell her until I knew I was going to be OK, and I am so thankful to God that I don’t need cancer care for now and I am feeling strong again,” she says.

“I have been on a medical aid scheme for some time, but because I had always been a generally healthy person it never occurred to me to go for a mammogram. I felt some tension next to my neck sometimes, and I went to the doctor thinking it was perhaps due to stress. When it did not improve, my general practitioner told me to go for a mammogram,” she recalls of the events leading to her diagnosis.

An area of suspicion on the mammogram led her to have a needle biopsy, which revealed malignancy. She was referred to Dr Adnaan Variava, a medical oncologist who is part of the multidisciplinary breast cancer team at Netcare Garden City Hospital led by specialist breast surgeon Prof Herbert Cubasch and plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr Nebil Lahouel.

In addition to Prof Cubasch, Dr Lahouel and Dr Variava, the multidisciplinary team includes radiation oncologist Dr Uzma Majeed, radiologists, consulting psychologists, social workers and dieticians working together so that the person can focus on their recovery. The team also works closely with the nuclear medicine department.

“The shock of a breast cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming in itself, and we have established a unit at Netcare Garden City Hospital offering a complete multidisciplinary healthcare team to support patients throughout every aspect of their treatment through to reconstruction,” says Prof Cubasch.

“The most important member of the team, of course, is the person who is being treated. As a unit, we all provide our input on the options available to help the person reach an informed decision on what is right for them as an individual.”

“I am so grateful that I was referred to these caring doctors, who said to me from the start, ‘We are here for you, allow us to help you’. I didn’t know anything about cancer, and they gave me support on this journey that was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced in healthcare before,” the cancer survivor recalls.

“I found it especially comforting when Prof Cubasch and the psychologist at the hospital told me that I hadn’t personally done anything to cause this. No one goes out looking for cancer, and it took me some time to fully realise that it can happen to anyone,” she says.

Dr Variava prescribed chemotherapy to shrink the tumour over the next seven months, but first Prof Cubasch and Dr Lahouel had to surgically insert a port in order to help make the chemotherapy treatment delivery as convenient and comfortable as possible.

“I could feel the effects of chemotherapy on my body, but I prayed, and although it was hard, I kept strong. Although I didn’t have an appetite, I forced myself to eat the foods they recommended to get all the nutrients my body needed.”

By July 2023, the chemotherapy had reduced the cancer to the point where she could no longer feel the lump, and she was ready for surgery to remove the remaining cancerous tissue and lymph node.

“After a few months, I was feeling a lot better. My nails and skin were returning to normal, and my scar healed. I had an appointment with Dr Lahouel to discuss the options for reconstruction.”

“Breast augmentation or reconstruction after cancer can either involve an implant to replace the lost breast tissue or, as in the case of this patient, a breast reduction or breast lift on the other breast can create the desired aesthetic balance. This contributes to higher patient satisfaction after surgery, having the cancer removed and breast lifted, with the added advantage of a younger breast shape than before surgery,” Dr Lahouel explains.

“God led me to this team of doctors who have come halfway around the world to help women here in South Africa, and they really did a beautiful job. I consider myself lucky to have found doctors who gave me hope to keep a positive mindset, and I thank God for keeping me strong on this journey to where I am today,” the breast cancer survivor says.

“I want to take this opportunity to encourage women to talk to their doctors about breast cancer and go for mammograms as often as their medical aid allows because cancer can be beaten, especially if it is diagnosed early.”

After a tragic shooting, a community is rallying to reclaim their park, honouring a beloved pup’s memory and restoring a sense of safety and solidarity.

Johannesburg, South Africa (26 February 2024) – A community in Randburg has banded together to reclaim their beloved park after a devastating incident shook their neighbourhood.

Bronwyn van der Spuy, a close friend of Good Things Guy, reached out to share the inspiring story of how neighbours have rallied together to honour the memory of a cherished pup and reclaim their sense of safety.

The incident unfolded tragically last Saturday evening in Delta Park, Randburg, when a neighbour was taking a leisurely stroll with his two loyal companions. Suddenly, their peaceful walk turned into a nightmare when they encountered armed assailants in what appeared to be an attempted robbery.

Bronwyn vividly recounted the harrowing ordeal, sharing, “There was an attempted robbery with one of our neighbours walking in the park at Delta Park on Saturday evening. He was walking his two dogs, and unfortunately, there were two guys and one had a gun.”

In a selfless act of bravery, one of his dogs, Lucy, attempted to shield her owner from harm but tragically, Lucy paid the ultimate price, losing her life in the line of duty. The neighbour, while valiantly attempting to confront the assailants, sustained severe injuries, enduring two gunshot wounds during the altercation.

Despite the trauma inflicted upon them, the community’s response was nothing short of remarkable.

Bronwyn recounted the moments of solidarity and heroism that followed, highlighting how neighbours rushed to aid the injured and ensure their neighbour’s survival. “All of our neighbours went to his aid and managed to get him into an ambulance… they managed to save his life.”

And in the midst of sorrow and pain, a symbol of hope and strength has emerged. The community, deeply affected by the incident, have resolved to commemorate Lucy’s bravery and honour her memory.

“What we want to do is commemorate little Lucy’s life,” Bronwyn expressed, echoing the sentiments of a community determined to turn tragedy into triumph.

“We’re all putting money together to get a memorial plaque for her.”

In an awe-inspiring display of resilience and unity, residents gathered in Delta Park on Sunday, reaffirming their commitment to reclaiming their sanctuary.

Bronwyn shared, “We all met in the park… we agree that we want to take our park back. We are sick and tired of living in fear.”

Indeed, the collective resolve to transform adversity into action has sparked a movement of empowerment and solidarity. They are now working on a plan to make their neighbourhood safer for everyone who lives there.

“We are getting all the residents together to actually take back our park and it’s a really good feel-good story from something so tragic,” Bronwyn affirmed, encapsulating the community’s unwavering determination to reclaim their sense of security and rebuild their shared spaces.

In the face of tragedy, the Randburg community’s unwavering spirit shines brightly, showcasing the power of compassion, courage, and community resilience. Together, they stand, united in their commitment to reclaiming their park and rebuilding their sense of home.

When the Bokke told us that we are stronger together, this is what they were talking about!

Rugby World Cup-winning captain Siya Kolisi, the Springboks, solo sailor Kirsten Neuschȁfer and Justice Desk Africa have been shortlisted, as South Africa received FOUR Nominations in the Laureus World Sports Awards 2024.

Global (26 February 2024) – South African sport is celebrating after receiving four nominations for the Laureus World Sports Awards 2024 – the most prestigious honours in sport – following a vote by the world’s media.

The Springboks are nominated for this year’s Laureus World Team of the Year Award following their momentous World Cup triumph over New Zealand in October. The captain of that side, Siya Kolisi, is nominated for the Laureus World Comeback of the Year Award, after recovering from a partial ligament tear to lead the Springboks to glory. Kirsten Neuschȁfer is shortlisted for the Laureus World Action Sportsperson of the Year Award, marking her extraordinary achievement of becoming the first female to win a solo round-the-world race via the three Great Capes. Rounding off the South African Nominees is Justice Desk Africa, a group in the running for the Laureus Sport for Good Award.

Six Nominees have been selected in each category, and the names of the Winners will be revealed on April 22, following a vote by the Laureus World Sports Academy – the world’s ultimate sports jury, made up of 69 of the greatest sporting legends of all time.

In October, the Springboks became the first to win four Rugby World Cups by overcoming New Zealand 12-11 at the Stade de France. In a performance which epitomised the fighting spirit now synonymous with the side, the Springboks capped an outstanding tournament during which they battled past hosts France, and England, on their way to claiming back-to-back world titles.

The Springboks are in contention for the Laureus World Team of the Year Award, alongside the Spain Women’s Football Team, who won their first World Cup; treble-winners Manchester City; the European Ryder Cup Team, following their dominant victory over their American counterparts; the all-conquering Oracle Red Bull Racing Team, who delivered a second straight Formula One World Constructors’ Championship, and the Germany Men’s Basketball Team for their incredible FIBA Basketball World Cup victory.

The shortlist for the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year Award, and Sportsman of the Year, contain not only the outstanding athletes of 2023, but some of the greatest of all time. Last year’s winner, Lionel Messi, is nominated once more in the latter category after an eighth Ballon d’Or, alongside sportsmen including Novak Djokovic, who won three Grand Slams in 2023, Max Verstappen after a third straight world championship in Formula One and Noah Lyles, world champion over 100 and 200 metres, plus the 4×100 metre relay. In the Sportswoman of the Year category, the Nominees include tennis’s World No.1 Iga Świątek, Aitana Bonmatí, the star of Spain’s FIFA World Cup win, and Mikaela Shiffrin, who became the all-time leader in World Cup wins in alpine skiing.

Siya Kolisi’s part in the Springboks’ success was even more remarkable due to the individual obstacles he had to overcome on the journey to that crowning moment. After a partial tear of his Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in April 2023, Kolisi’s World Cup dream appeared to be over. However, unwilling to accept his fate, he underwent surgery before embarking on a punishing programme of physical rehabilitation and, just 119 days after the operation, Kolisi led his side out in their tournament opener against Scotland.

He has been nominated for the Laureus World Comeback of the Year Award, alongside gymnast Simone Biles, who collected four gold medals at the World Championships after taking time away from the spotlight to prioritise her mental health; Sébastien Haller, the Borussia Dortmund striker who returned to the pitch just months after being diagnosed with testicular cancer; Denver Nuggets basketball star, Jamal Murray, who spent 18 months on the sidelines with an ACL tear before shining in the NBA playoffs; Katarina Johnson-Thompson, who bravely battled back from a series of injuries to win a heptathlon world title in Budapest, and tennis sensation Markéta Vondroušová, who became the lowest-ranked winner at Wimbledon during the Open era after missing most of the previous year with a wrist injury.

Siya Kolisi said: “This is such an overwhelming moment for me – to be nominated with the Springboks for Laureus Team of the Year, and also individually for Comeback of the Year. I know just what it means to win a Laureus Award. I was lucky enough to be captain of the Springboks in 2019 when we won the World Cup, and as a result the following year we won Laureus Team of the Year. I’m hoping we can win it again, as always it is a formidable group of teams nominated this year, including Manchester City, Spain’s Women’s World Cup winners and Oracle Red Bull Racing. It was a close thing whether I would recover from injury in time to play in the Rugby World Cup. I made it, so it’s a very special personal moment for me to receive my nomination.”

The Golden Globe Race is one-of-a-kind, restricting its solo sailors to technology from no later than 1968. For most competitors, this challenge is big enough. Kirsten Neuschȁfer, however, is not like most competitors. she diverted midway through her own race to rescue fellow competitor, Tapio Lehtinen, whose boat had sunk, before eventually crossing the finishing line after more than 235 days at sea to complete a thrilling adventure.

Her awe-inspiring achievements have been recognised in her nomination for the Laureus World Action Sportsperson of the Year Award. She features alongside BMX cyclist Beth Shriever, who reclaimed her world title at the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow, while surfing duo Filipe Toledo and Caroline Marks are also nominated for their respective World Surf League triumphs. Street skateboarder Rayssa Leal is a Nominee for the second straight year after winning three major titles in a wonderful season. She is joined on the shortlist by 13-year-old Arisa Trew, who became the first woman skater to land a 720 (two full rotations) in vert skateboarding.

Nominees for the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award include Jude Bellingham, who began his Real Madrid career with 10 goals in 10 starts; Coco Gauff, who won her first Grand Slam title at the US Open, at the age of 19, and Qin Haiyang, who swept the breaststroke events (50, 100 and 200 metres) at the World Aquatics Championships.

Each year the Laureus Sport for Good Award recognises a community sports-based programme which has helped to improve the lives of young people and bring communities together. Five inspirational and transformational programmes have been shortlisted by a specialist selection panel.

The shortlist for this Award includes Justice Desk Africa, a programme based in Cape Town that empowers young people in South Africa to understand and defend their human rights. This vital project provides girls with essential mental health support, as well as self-defence classes and leadership sessions. The shortlist also features Bola Pra Frente, a programme using sport to develop life skills and empower youth in communities in Rio de Janeiro; Fundación Rafa Nadal, which uses sport and education to empower vulnerable young people in Spain and India, and Dancing Grounds, a New Orleans-based programme that connects dance and creativity with social justice issues. The nominations are completed by the ISF Cambodia, which aims to provide a route out of poverty in urban slums and rural communities, and Obiettivo Napoli, which works with over 100 boys and girls facing exclusion and economic difficulties in the Italian city.

Dolly Hlongwane is mobilising Joburg CBD residents in honour of the late Phillip Krinsky, sparking a community cleanup drive!

spar hero of the week

Johannesburg, South Africa (26 February 2024) – In the heart of Johannesburg’s bustling Central Business District (CBD), amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life, a remarkable story of community spirit and resilience is unfolding.

Meet Dolly Hlongwane, a spirited Zimbabwean whose dedication to her neighbourhood is inspiring a wave of positive change.

Dolly has become a symbol of hope in her community, rallying residents to take action and reclaim their streets. In memory of the beloved Phillip Krinsky, whose tragic passing left a void in the hearts of many, Dolly has spearheaded efforts to clean up the streets of Honey, Mitchell, and Fife Streets in Berea, Johannesburg.

Phillip’s life was cut short after a courageous battle following a harrowing encounter during an attempted hijacking. Determined to honour his memory, Dolly has galvanised her neighbours to join hands in a collective effort to revitalise their surroundings. Despite facing adversity and even enduring abuse from some local residents, Dolly remains unwavering in her commitment to making a difference. Her boundless energy and unwavering dedication have become the backbone of this powerful community-driven initiative.

Beyond organising clean-up campaigns, Dolly has invested considerable time and resources into fostering unity and improving neighbourhood infrastructure. From arranging a heartfelt memorial service for Phillip to spearheading the installation of a gate to secure the local substation, her impact reverberates throughout the community.

Notably, Dolly’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. Several local residents and property owners have stepped up to support initiatives aimed at enhancing community safety and cohesion. Together, they recognise the importance of safeguarding vital resources such as the local substation, which plays a pivotal role in ensuring access to electricity for all.

However, Dolly’s work is far from over. Recognising the pressing need to address ongoing challenges, she has initiated a fundraising drive to acquire essential equipment, including a garden trimmer. This tool will enable residents to tackle overgrown vegetation and maintain cleaner, safer streets for all.

Through her actions, she is proving that, indeed, the power to effect change lies within each and every one of us.

Two South Africans’ paths converged from disparate beginnings in apartheid-era South Africa, leading to the founding of Tracker Academy and Tshokwane River Camp, symbolizing unity and hope for the nation’s future.

Skukuza, South Africa (26 February 2024) – It’s a story of a dream. A fantasy perhaps…that came true. And one that will inspire you. Two South Africans showcasing unity, hope, and the enduring spirit of our country.

I entered the world in 1975, far from where Renias Mhlongo’s journey began beneath a jackal berry tree in the greater Kruger National Park. Our origins diverged: his in the Shangaan hunter-gatherer traditions, and mine amongst the southern Cape’s cattle farms.

Yet, our childhoods whispered of future paths. Mine through games of hide-and-seek in the dunes of Plettenberg Bay. And Renias’s through “Xitumbelelani,” a Shangaan version, teaching the art of observation – and a prelude to his future as a world-renowned animal tracker.

The tumultuous backdrop of apartheid South Africa was a reality for Renias, especially when his father was falsely accused of poaching. An event that turned their lives upside down and had them forcibly removed from their land. Renias remembers that fateful night the family fled to a settlement called Dixie. They waded through a river, as a little boy, Renias clutching onto the tail of a cow to pull himself through the water – as the family trekked northwards into the unknown.

Our paths crossed at Londolozi Game Reserve 20 years later. The only common threads binding us were the echoes of hide-and-seek and perhaps an affinity for cows! At Londolozi, we found a place where diverse cultures were poured together. Immersed in its incredible conservation ethos, we witnessed the power of unity driven by a clear, shared purpose. Walking the ancient animal paths of Londolozi, Renias and I were acutely aware of our differences, our fears, and doubts of been thrown together in an unlikely partnership.

The name Mhlongo was synonymous with legendary tracking, and under Renias’s wing, we became an ace leopard tracking team that soon found its collective purpose.

Renias, alongside his two brothers, was pivotal in pioneering wild leopard viewing at Londolozi. Until then, spotting one was pure luck. Their efforts made it far more likely to get sightings of calm leopards. They transformed the ancient craft of tracking into a legacy that drew countless visitors to the region.

But the heart wants what it wants, and ours wanted a different trail.

Leaving behind secure posts at Londolozi, we left with a vision to establish a school for trackers – to restore ancient African animal tracking for the benefit of wildlife conservation. Together with Gaynor Rupert, Tracker Academy was founded to empower young rural people. Over a decade later, the Academy has seen 266 graduates finding gainful employment in the conservation industry.

Our dream matured. We aimed to create a sanctuary where these skills could flourish. A venue for our graduates to demonstrate their exceptional tracking skills to discerning travellers.

For fifteen years, we chased the elusive dream of our own game reserve – submitting tenders, negotiating with banks, and courting investors. We could track leopards, yet navigating the complex terrain of high finance eluded us!

Despite many rejections, Renias remained steadfast, believing it was his ancestors’ wish.

What started as an uneasy alliance at Londolozi had now grown into deep kinship – forged through years of shared experiences. Over time the concept of ‘stronger together’ became obvious to us. In fact, it drove us.

In an ecotourism industry where true transformation is so scarce, we adopted the tenacity of a couple of honey badgers to prove it could be done. “Buti, we will dig even if the bees sting us,” was Ren’s best. We wanted to showcase the remarkable potential of South African unified by a shared and clear purpose – in our industry.

Eventually, perseverance bore fruit with the establishment of Tshokwane River Camp in July 2023. One of the best days of our lives. Now, the young man who once herded cattle on the dusty savanna a few kilometres away is a shareholder in a legitimate safari business (KrugerUntamed) that stands for more than profit—it stands for hope and unity.

The safari camp is not just a business; it’s a tangible representation of our shared vision and commitment to South Africa’s future.

The day we signed the shareholders’ agreement, Ren sent me this short message “Hi swi kumile. 🐆” (We found it).

Discover how painted superhero masks are transforming the cancer treatment experience for children, instilling courage and resilience in the face of adversity.

spar hero of the week

South Africa (20 February 2024) – Over the past five decades, substantial advances in available treatments have led to large improvements in childhood cancer survival rates which have increased from 30% in the 1960s to now up to 80% in most countries.

Despite this, the treatment journey for children diagnosed with cancer may be daunting and uncertain.

Janica Smit, the radiotherapy lead at Life Eugene Marais Hospital in Pretoria, noticed a common thread among her young patients—a palpable anxiety during their radiotherapy sessions. The culprit? The formidable thermoplastic mask, designed to immobilise them during treatment. Alone in the bunker, these children grapple with their fears as they confront the daunting reality of cancer treatment.

Driven by a mission to alleviate this distress, Smit embarked on a journey to reimagine the radiotherapy experience for her young charges. Drawing inspiration from innovative practices around the world, she stumbled upon a beacon of hope: painting the masks to resemble superheroes.

“I delved into research, seeking solutions to enhance the journey for our pediatric patients,” she shares. “While some institutions opt for general anaesthesia to ensure stillness during treatment, I was captivated by the idea of infusing creativity into our approach.”

Navigating the complexities of medical safety, Smit meticulously selected paints devoid of substances that might react adversely with radiation. Collaborating closely with the medical physics team, she forged ahead with her vision, determined to transform mundane masks into symbols of courage and resilience.

The process is labour-intensive, requiring patience and precision. Each mask undergoes a metamorphosis over two nights, as layers of paint bring beloved characters to life. From the iconic Spiderman to beloved Barbie, every stroke of the brush symbolizes a child’s journey from vulnerability to valour.

And the impact has been profound. Since the inception of the painted masks, not a single child has required general anaesthesia.

“I started with this special project to help reduce my patient’s stress levels. By allowing them to wear the mask of their favourite hero, they’re encouraged to be brave and to face their fears.”

Indeed, the significance of Smit’s endeavour resonates deeply as we united to commemorate International Childhood Cancer Day on February 15, 2024.

In the face of adversity, may we always find the strength to embrace our inner superheroes and emerge victorious against the darkest of foes.
