South Africa’s Impofu wind farms, the largest private renewable energy project, set for construction after years of planning and community collaboration.

South Africa (29 February 2024) – In a significant stride towards sustainable energy, South Africa’s landscape is set to embrace its largest private renewable energy plant yet.

The Impofu wind farms, nestled in the picturesque Kouga region of the Eastern Cape, have been granted the green light for construction, marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s renewable energy journey.

Scheduled to commence in March 2024, the construction of three 110-megawatt (MW) wind farms signifies a monumental leap towards a greener, more sustainable energy future. The project, spearheaded by Red Cap Energy, not only highlights the commitment to renewable resources but also represents a collaborative effort between stakeholders and the local community.

Jadon Schmidt, the Business Development Manager at Red Cap Energy, reflects on the journey leading to this milestone, saying, “Since 2013, we’ve signed up 87 separate parcels of land for the powerline and spent years negotiating with farmers to lease land on which to build wind turbines.”

Local landowners have played a pivotal role in the development process, showcasing a remarkable spirit of cooperation and foresight. Vernon Basson, owner of Vergaderingskraal, recounts his involvement, emphasizing the importance of leveraging local knowledge to navigate the intricacies of the landscape.

“The whole process has been pretty smooth,” says Basson, reflecting the community’s enthusiasm and commitment to sustainable development.

The Impofu project’s significance extends beyond energy production, fostering economic growth and sustainability within local communities. Xolile Peter Lamani, Chairperson of the Reebok Rant Worker’s Trust, speaks of the tangible benefits derived from the project.

“The extra income from the turbines is going to help us keep our livestock healthy and deal with drought during the summer,” says Lamani, highlighting the transformative impact on livelihoods and agricultural resilience.

Despite encountering challenges along the way, including environmental considerations and logistical hurdles, Red Cap Energy’s unwavering commitment to sustainability has remained steadfast.

Red Cap Energy’s pioneering efforts in renewable energy development have set a precedent for future projects, reinforcing their commitment to driving positive change in the energy landscape. With a wealth of experience and a steadfast dedication to sustainability, Red Cap Energy and many other incredible Renewable Energy projects in South Africa continue to pave the way towards a brighter, more sustainable future for generations to come.

Two coworkers and close friends shared the trip of a lifetime after Lakiwe invited Monique to her home village, Qokolweni, for the December holidays. Their adventure in the traditional Xhosa community has gone viral!

Qokolweni, South Africa (10 January 2024) — Over the December holidays, two coworkers decided to take their friendship to the next level by sharing a holiday together.

Monique Weich (crowdfunding institution BackaBuddy’s Donor Retention Coordinator) and Lakiwe Blekiwe (the Head of Charities) headed to the Eastern Cape’s rural village of Qokolweni, where an unforgettable holiday would unfold.

Qokolweni is Lakiwe’s village. A place of family, tradition and Xhosa culture; inviting Monique was not just an invitation to a unique getaway in a picturesque village, but an extension of one the most significant parts of Xhosa culture—the Mgidi celebration (a young man’s transition into adulthood, which Lakiwe’s nephew was celebrating).

@qokolweni_mlungu Theres an Mlungu on my stoep! #easterncape #Qokolweni #village #culture #heritage #khosa #friendship #love #tradition #blackgirlmagic #fyp #cultureshock #afrikaans #southafrican @Lakiwe Blekiwe ♬ original sound – Qokolweni_Mlungu

The duo, who have been friends for five years, believe their friendship works as well as it does because of the mutual respect they have for each other and each other’s cultural underpinnings.

On this holiday, Monique, the ‘Mlungu’ of the trip and the village got to fully immerse herself in a cultural experience outside of her own. In the same breath, Lakiwe got to share some of the most personal and special parts of her life with a friend. The act of experiencing Monique’s wonder and curiosity incited even more cultural pride in Lakiwe, as well as a lot of laughs for the both of them as Monique discovered the ropes of village life.

The adventure was documented on TikTok and has, unsurprisingly gone viral.

From spotlighting South Africa’s cultural riches to sharing a tapestry of unity through differences with the most important ingredient (friendship) at the centre, Monique and Lakiwe’s adventure has tugged at the hearts of the world.

Coming home and off the high of the trip wasn’t easy for either of them, with Monique sharing that the experience had a profound impact on her. In fact, she was even given her own tradition Xhosa name ‘Nomathamsanqa’.

On her perspective of the experience, Lakiwe shared:

“From pit toilets to ‘Vaskom’ baths, fermented porridge mornings, and even accepting unreliable transport as normal. What bonded us even more was her love for Mama’s steamed bread and soup – that, [Monique] truly cherished,” Lakiwe commented.

The coworkers have reminded us that sometimes walking a mile in someone else’s shoes can be one of the most enriching parts of the journey, while letting someone into yours is as empowering as it is exciting.

Fourways resident Genevieve Creamer raised an astounding R481,000 for Woodrock Animal Rescue and the 1st for Women Foundation through her ‘Going on 21’ birthday campaign.

South Africa (06 January 2023) – Genevieve Creamer, a Fourways resident whose recent 42nd birthday celebration has not only left a lasting memory but has also generated an astonishing R481,000 for two noteworthy causes: Woodrock Animal Rescue and the 1st for Women Foundation.

But this is not the first time the South African has used her birthday to give back! Two years ago, she marked her 40th birthday with a charity run in Durban that raised an impressive R450,000.

“Two years ago, I decided to enter my 40s with purpose by doing something that would connect my passion for running with a greater good,” Genevieve fondly recalls.

Encouraged by the overwhelming support she received, she was spurred on to launch another impactful campaign in 2023. The fundraising extravaganza, dubbed “Going on 21,” took place amidst the picturesque backdrop of Steyn City. Over 180 enthusiastic participants laced up their running shoes and tackled either a 21km or 10km route through the estate’s verdant parklands, culminating their journey at a breathtaking 300m lagoon.

The success of “Going on 21” was not just a result of the scenic location but was largely attributable to the remarkable generosity displayed by participants, sponsors, and supporters alike. Funds poured in through entry fees, donations, and a spirited auction held on the day of the event. The proceeds were then allocated equally between Woodrock Animal Rescue and the 1st for Women Foundation.

Woodrock Animal Rescue, a revered non-profit organisation, stands as a beacon of hope for hundreds of animals in need.

Estelle Meldau, the founder, expressed her heartfelt gratitude, stating, “Securing our animal rescue centre with a perimeter wall has been our number one fundraising focus this year. Genevieve’s ‘Going on 21’ campaign has made our goal a reality.”

The 1st for Women Foundation, another beneficiary of Genevieve’s commendable efforts, focuses on uplifting communities by providing education and support to survivors of abuse.

Seugnette van Wyngaard elaborates, “This donation allows us to continue giving hope, light, and courage to countless victims and survivors of abuse.”

Genevieve is quick to acknowledge that her accomplishments would not have been possible without the unwavering support of sponsors and participants.

“Without ‘Going on 21’s’ incredible sponsors and supporters, this achievement would not have been possible,” she states emphatically. “It reaffirms that when a group of people come together, they can make a huge difference. I am honoured to be able to facilitate this difference.”

Phiwemna, a baby born prematurely due to severe pregnancy-induced hypertension, has defied all odds to thrive, bringing immense joy to the Madikizela family – a true Christmas miracle!

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (22 December 2023) – The Madikizela family is living a heartwarming story that encapsulates the true essence of the festive season – their journey with their youngest member, Phiwemna, is nothing short of extraordinary, filled with moments that have touched the hearts of many.

Yandisa Madikizela was unexpectedly admitted to hospital at 25 weeks pregnant due to severe pregnancy-induced hypertension, also known as preeclampsia. What started as a routine check-up spiralled into a critical situation that demanded immediate attention.

Sister Amanda Grobler, the unit manager of the maternity and neonatal intensive care unit at Netcare Margate Hospital, expressed the gravity of the situation, “Yandisa was extremely ill. Preeclampsia can be exceptionally dangerous and can cause severe complications. It can potentially even be fatal.”

Phiwemna, fragile and barely holding onto life, then entered the world. The little baby weighed a mere 748 grams. However, the resilient spirit of this tiny fighter soon became evident.

Sister Grobler vividly recalls the transformative moment: “We warmed him and gave him a little oxygen, and that is when it all changed… he started rallying. It was a miracle, a total turnaround.”

Against all odds, Phiwemna refused to give up and although initially fragile, the little warrior showed his incredible resilience, captivating the hearts of his family and the dedicated medical team at Netcare Margate Hospital.

“It really is quite remarkable that this baby decided he wanted to live, against all odds. Fortunately, despite his extremely fragile state, he was generally healthy – he had no infection, and there was nothing wrong with his lungs,” Sister Grobler commented.

The Madikizela family’s joy was palpable as they welcomed Phiwemna home after 84 days in the hospital. Yandisa, a dedicated mother, juggled work as a policewoman with providing expressed milk for her baby throughout his hospitalisation. Her generosity extended beyond her own family, as she also donated excess breastmilk to the Netcare Ncelisa human milk banks to nourish other babies in need.

Sharing her heartfelt emotions, Yandisa said, “When my husband came to see me and told me our baby was alive, you should have seen his face; he was so happy. We named our son Phiwemna, which means ‘special gift to me’.”

“He is very good and is such a sweet baby, and I’m so enjoying him! I took him for his immunisations today, and he already weighs 2.21 kilogrammes.”

As the festive season unfolds, the Madikizela family is relishing every moment of their first Christmas with Phiwemna, their precious bundle of joy. Today, Yandisa is a picture of health, and Phiwemna continues to thrive, reaching new milestones and bringing immense happiness to those around him.

A true Christmas miracle.

The Plastic Changemakers programme is going to shift how the youth view the environmental impacts of plastic pollution.

South Africa (24 November 2023) – The Plastic Changemakers programme was recently launched in Cape Town by the Breteau Foundation. The programme aims to educate primary school children on the environmental impacts of plastic pollution.

Mona Ewees Mkumatela, regional development manager for the Breteau Foundation in South Africa, says the programme has already seen significant take-up from education practitioners, community organisations and NPOs.

“Since we officially launched the programme in October we have had extremely positive feedback from our partners across sectors,” she says. “This is very encouraging for us. We rely heavily on others to help us in our quest to reach one million children across the world and turn them into ambassadors for change in the plastics pollution space.”

Bruce Probyn, Chairman of the Western Cape Education Council, says engaging today’s learners requires a shift away from traditional teaching methods.

“We need to think differently about the way we interest and excite pupils,” he says. “The days of ‘chalk and talk’ are fading. They’re being replaced by a need for innovative, engaging approaches.”

Probyn’s long-term vision for the programme is optimistic.

“I envision that if the Plastic Changemakers programme becomes deeply embedded over time, it could lead to litter-free schools, which, in turn, would influence the surrounding communities.”

Probyn highlights the importance of a clear plan, well-thought-out steps, and consistent support.

“We collaborate with foundation phase colleagues who are actively engaged in approximately 18 schools, where multidisciplinary teaching is being implemented,” he says. “In this context, the Plastic Changemakers programme has a unique and valuable role to fulfil.”

The programme has also raised interest among local community organisations, including the Bonteheuwel Training Skills Squad (BTS). Zaironesa Karriem, the driving force behind BTS, says, “It’s not just about training and life skills; it’s about cultivating a sense of exploration, adventure, and fun.”

BTS serves three high schools and 14 primary schools in Bonteheuwel, and aims to engage all these institutions in the initiative.

“Our motivation is rooted in the desire to reshape the perspectives of young individuals. We aim to provide our learners with a practical understanding of how what is often perceived as waste and pollution can, in fact, hold the potential for creating sustainable opportunities,” says Karriem. “By exposing learners to initiatives like the Plastic Changemakers programme, BTS aims to instil seeds of change, nurturing values that the children can carry with them into the world as responsible ambassadors.”

Karriem says the programme engages children in a relatable and tactile way.

“It’s about bridging the gap between classroom theory and real-world practice, ensuring that every child’s inherent creativity finds expression. It’s also about building confidence and nurturing skills that, with ongoing support, will evolve into positive action.”

Jocelyn Anderson, Sustainable Schools Programme Manager at environmental education organisation, Nature Connect, says the Plastic Changemakers programme is the perfect addition to Nature Connect’s online library of quality, curriculum-aligned resources to support teaching and learning in schools.

“What sets it apart is its ability to engage youth actively in environmental action,” she adds. “It provides students with opportunities to take real steps towards caring for the environment, instilling in them a sense of agency and empowerment.

“It cultivates a sense of agency in both teachers and learners, motivating them to actively participate in nature conservation efforts.”

Anderson says her hope is to include the Plastic Changemakers programme in teacher training workshops, events, and immersive education experiences.

“Specifically, we are looking at incorporating the programme into our initiatives designed to raise awareness about plastic pollution, such as our beach clean-ups and in-school lessons.

“We will also be adding the programme materials to our online resource library for teachers to access.”

Ewees Mkumatela says the Breteau Foundation would welcome engagement with government departments, schools, communities and NPOs.

“Our success depends on partnerships with like-minded organisations who are committed to improving our environment through educational activities such as the Plastic Changemakers programme.”

South African organization, Wildlife ACT, achieves global recognition for ‘Best for Nature-Positive Tourism’ at the WTM World Responsible Tourism Awards, showcasing the continent’s leadership in responsible travel.

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (10 November 2023) – In a significant triumph for South African conservation, Wildlife ACT, a dedicated organization based in KwaZulu-Natal, has clinched the coveted first place for ‘Best for Nature-Positive Tourism’ at the esteemed WTM World Responsible Tourism Awards for 2023, hosted by the Responsible Tourism Partnership.

This remarkable achievement follows Wildlife ACT’s earlier Gold win at the WTM Africa World Responsible Tourism Awards, propelling them into the pool of global contenders. Notably, five out of the eight award categories were dominated by African organizations, underscoring the continent’s prowess in responsible tourism.

These awards serve as a beacon, illuminating the path of responsible and sustainable tourism practices within the travel industry. By bestowing recognition upon trailblazers like Wildlife ACT, they inspire others to adopt ethical approaches to tourism.

Megan De Jager, Portfolio Director – Travel, Tourism & RX Africa Marketing, emphasizes the pivotal role of these awards: “The WTM World Responsible Tourism Awards not only showcase the best of the best in responsible tourism but set the compass for our global industry in creating sustainable travel and holiday experiences.”

Wildlife ACT: A Beacon of Conservation Excellence

Wildlife ACT, nestled in the heart of KwaZulu-Natal, stands as a beacon of conservation excellence. Specializing in on-the-ground endangered species conservation, daily monitoring of priority species, management of human-wildlife conflict, and community involvement in conservation, the organization has earned its stripes.

The spotlight is on critically endangered species like the African Wild Dog, Black Rhino, and six Vulture species in South Africa, some facing the brink of extinction. Wildlife ACT, through its unique voluntourism model, has provided free professional monitoring services to over ten Zululand protected areas for 15 years. Their impact extends beyond borders, contributing to endangered species management across Africa and the restoration of North Island, Seychelles.

Johan Maree, Co-Founder and Director of Wildlife ACT, expresses pride in the team: “This award is a reflection of their passion and dedication.” He extends gratitude to the volunteers, acknowledging their pivotal role in making a meaningful contribution to the projects.

Community Conservation: Bridging the Gaps

Wildlife ACT understands that true conservation goes beyond protected areas. Bridging the gap between communities and wildlife, their Community Conservation Programme fosters participation and strengthens understanding. This program not only highlights the intrinsic value of nature but also underscores the economic opportunities within the conservation sector.

The global acclaim for ‘Best Nature-Positive Tourism’ emphasizes the synergy between Wildlife ACT’s voluntourism and community conservation models, seamlessly complementing the vital work undertaken by their dedicated team.

Johan Maree concludes, “Without your hands-on involvement, Wildlife ACT simply would not have been able to achieve the same level of impact over the last 15 years.”

This accolade is not just a feather in the cap for Wildlife ACT but also a resounding endorsement for South Africa and the entire continent. Africa’s commitment to responsible tourism shines bright, making it a destination of choice for conscientious travellers.

Siya Kolisi’s BOS Ice Tea collaboration has raised over R200,000 to date for the Kolisi Foundation, making a substantial impact on vital community causes.

Johannesburg, South Africa (22 October 2023) – In a heartwarming display of unity and support, South African rugby legend Siya Kolisi, along with his wife Rachel Kolisi and the Kolisi Foundation, have teamed up with BOS Ice Tea to create a Limited Edition beverage.

The result has been nothing short of spectacular, as this collaboration has raised over R200,000 to date for the Kolisi Foundation, showcasing the immense generosity and goodwill of people both in South Africa and Europe.

BOS Ice Tea embarked on this journey to assist the Kolisi Foundation in its mission to instigate positive change through sport and education, tackle gender-based violence, and address food security issues. The Limited Edition BOS Ice Tea, launched in August, has become a symbol of hope and support for the Foundation. With every purchase of a can in South Africa or a bottle in Europe, a donation is made to the Kolisi Foundation. This simple act of enjoying a delicious beverage has become a powerful way to contribute to these vital causes.

The design of the Limited Edition can and bottle is a masterpiece in itself, a fusion of BOS’s distinctive boldness and Siya Kolisi’s Xhosa heritage. The beautiful Xhosa beading patterning that adorns the packaging represents not only a unique artistic design but also a deep connection to Siya Kolisi’s roots.

He explains, “It is important for me to know who I am and where I come from, so that I can pass it on to my children. I love being Xhosa. I love the traditions of our culture. It’s something that I will take with me wherever I go and show it with pride to the rest of the world.”

Will Battersby, CEO of BOS Ice Tea, couldn’t be happier with the overwhelming success of this collaboration.

He notes, “We are so pleased to see the donation amount grow as awareness of the collaboration spreads. Sales of Siya Kolisi’s Limited Edition have been fantastic, which means that significant impact can be made in the projects run by the Kolisi Foundation.”

It’s clear that people are not only enjoying a refreshing beverage but also embracing the opportunity to make a difference in their communities.

Rachel Kolisi, Co-founder and CEO of the Kolisi Foundation expressed her gratitude for the incredible support this campaign has garnered, not only locally but also abroad. She believes that this partnership demonstrates the immense power of collective efforts to drive positive change in a nation. The funds raised will be allocated across the three core focus areas of the Kolisi Foundation: Food Security, Gender-Based Violence (GBV), and Education & Sports. Rachel reminds us that sometimes, even a single act of kindness can have a profound impact. She extends her heartfelt thanks to every individual and business that has thrown their support behind this special campaign.

The BOS campaign carries a powerful message that resonates with everyone: “We are all brewed for greatness.”

In a series of short videos shared on social media, Siya and Rachel have conveyed their heartfelt insights, reminding us of the power of unity and the potential for positive change.

Siya Kolisi and BOS Ice Tea have demonstrated that a simple act, like savouring a revitalising drink, can generate waves of positive change that reach far and wide, showcasing the strength of unity, community support, and the shared belief that we are all “crafted for greatness.” Siya Kolisi’s Limited Edition BOS Ice Tea serves not only as a beverage but also as a beacon of hope, a prompt that each of us can play a part in enhancing the world, one sip at a time.

South Africa’s victorious rugby team, the Bokke, once again united a nation in their thrilling win, propelling them into the semi-finals of the World Cup.

Global (16 October 2023) – The Bokke did so much more tonight than just win this match. And good grief, what a match. It was so bladdy intense.

They did it again. They brought us together.

There is something so magical about World Cups. Especially Rugby ones… when we get to come together as South Africans to support our Bokke. And so many of us around the world were screaming for them! Some around a braai with friends and family. Some down the road at their local. Some on their phones while loadshedding tried to take away their gees. And some in bars in faraway lands.

But we came together to shout for South Africa.

And they did us so flipping proud.

Our country is going through so much. All the time. Every single day.

We can sometimes – very often – get lost in the never-ending decay, the constant crime, harrowing poverty, gross corruption, political games to constantly divide, the total lack of leadership and the sadness and fear that seems to consume us all.

But last night our Bokke came out the gates, played with all their heart and brought us together again.

Last night felt like that final match in 2019. Or the one in 2007. Or that one in 1995

Do you remember what Nelson Mandela said all those years ago? “Sport has the power to change the world. Sport has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. Sport can create hope where there was only despair.”

What an incredibly big responsibility our Bokke have: to unite our country in the face of all our adversities. To create hope where there is despair.

And they make it look so flipping easy.

They teach us that great things can be achieved when we work together towards a common goal.

So ja, the Bokke did so much more tonight than just win a match against France.

They brought us together. Again.

And now we are in the semi-finals!

SOUTH AFRICA, WE ARE IN THE SEMI-FINALS!!!
