Kuils River, South Africa (05 March 2024) – The waiters at the Zevenwacht Spur put on a great performance for someone’s birthday and it is going viral, even now, 10 weeks after it was originally shared.

The nation was enthralled when news broke of the Thabo Bester prison break scandal; GroundUp shared that the convicted criminal had not died in a fire as originally reported and had, in fact, escaped!

South Africa (05 March 2024) – One of the most anticipated docuseries has officially been confirmed and the trailer is here to entice us all! “Tracking Thabo Bester” is the true-crime documentary South Africa has been asking for ever since GroundUp first broke the news that the convicted murderer and rapist did not burn to death in Cell 35 after all and was instead shopping at Woolworths in Sandton City.

Thabo Bester was the most searched person in South Africa on Google in 2023, with his co-accused, Dr Nandipha Magudumana, just behind in fourth place, as the whole country obsessed over Bestermania and the stormy tale of love, murder, deception and corruption. Daily Maverick named them both ‘SA Villain of the Year.’

The larger-than-life story of South Africa’s most famous prison break is in safe hands: Tracking Thabo Bester is being produced by local true-crime pioneers IdeaCandy, the production company behind the SAFTA-winning Devilsdorp, the Sanlam Group Financial Journalist of the Year-winning Steinheist, and the Showmax true-crime record breaker Rosemary’s Hitlist.

The four-part investigation will be screened in two halves on Showmax on the 15th and 22nd of March 2024.

The first episode follows GroundUp journalists Marecia Damons and Daniel Steyn as they investigate an anonymous tip-off that the burnt body at Mangaung Correctional Centre may not have been Bester. Damons and Steyn went on to win the prestigious Nat Nakasa Award and share the Vodacom Journalist of the Year award for breaking the jaw-dropping story and its biggest plot twists. They also co-wrote the bestselling book The Thabo Bester Story: The Facebook Rapist, the Celebrity Doctor and the Escape from Cell 35.

Subsequent episodes look at why Bester was called the Facebook rapist and in jail originally; how a celebrity doctor fell for a convicted criminal and left her children behind to go on the run with him to Tanzania; and who really died in Cell 35.

Interviews include prisoners and prison warders at Mangaung Correctional Centre; the family of Katlego Bereng Mpholo, whose body was found in Cell 35; Nkosinathi Sekeleni, Nandipha’s older brother; and former South African Police Service head profiler Dr Gérard Labuschagne, who interviewed Bester after his 2012 arrest for rape and murder. The documentary also shows the media and social media reactions to the story.

Having earned three SAFTA nominations in the past two years for her work editing Steinheist, Devilsdorp and Murder in Paris, Nikki Comninos made her Showmax Original debut as a director on December’s Convict Conman, which looked at Dawie de Villiers – another South African running a media business from inside jail, where he was also serving time for rape. She’s again at the helm of Tracking Thabo Bester.

“We tend to discuss Thabo Bester like it’s an isolated case but it’s clearly not,” says Comninos. “Bester has been depicted as some kind of anomaly for being able to run a business while incarcerated, but so did Dawie de Villiers – also a convicted rapist who lured his victims online – at a completely different prison. This raises questions about what is happening with the South African prison system.”

The trial of Bester, Magudumana and their co-accused was supposed to begin in the Free State High Court at the end of February but has been postponed to 5 June 2024.

Desi Koolen has partnered with Volvo Trucks to promote road safety through their ‘Stop, Look, and Wave’ campaign.

Johannesburg, South Africa (02 March 2024) – Desmond (Desi) Koolen, the young South African sensation who captured hearts globally with his infectious charm and remarkable talent, is once again making waves, but this time, it’s not just with his soulful voice.

Partnering with Volvo Trucks, Desi is amplifying a message of safety and awareness on the roads through their new campaign: “Stop, Look, and Wave.”

You may remember Desi from his viral rendition of James Brown’s “I Got You (I Feel Good),” which catapulted him to internet stardom, even catching the attention of Hollywood’s elite like Wayne Brady, Keri Hilson, and Will Smith. Originally shared by his proud mother, Adele Koolen, the video quickly garnered over 1.2 million views, spreading joy and positivity across the digital landscape.

Desi’s journey to stardom has been nothing short of remarkable. Good Things Guy, known for spotlighting inspiring stories of hope and goodness, was the first to share Desi’s story with the world. Since then, his infectious energy and undeniable talent have graced the pages of numerous local and global publications, even affording him the opportunity to rub shoulders with the esteemed Springbok rugby team.

Now, Desi is harnessing his influence for an even greater cause – road safety. Teaming up with Volvo Trucks for their innovative “Stop, Look, and Wave” campaign, Desi is using his platform to educate both children and parents on the importance of vigilance when sharing the road with heavy vehicles.

The essence of the campaign is simple yet profound: instead of merely glancing left and right, individuals are encouraged to STOP, LOOK, and WAVE. By taking these extra precautions, they not only ensure their own safety but also enhance visibility for truck drivers, who often have a higher vantage point on the road.

Watch the video below and remember, the next time you find yourself at an intersection, think of Desi’s message: Stop, Look, and Wave.

Cape Town, South Africa (28 February 2024) – Miss Erasmus is a high school Life Sciences teacher who decided to turn her bare classroom into a homely space. She shares videos on her TikTok account, all related to being a teacher in South Africa.

Many teachers in South Africa are required to set up their own classrooms and most go above and beyond to create a fun and bright learning space. We all had that one teacher in school whose classroom was the best place to be.

Miss Erasmus is one of those teachers. She has been filming the process of decorating her new classroom, adding her own personal flares. She even included funny biology puns to make the room sciency.

She explains that decorating the classroom brings her great joy. It is mostly self-funded and the effort seems to go a long way with her students. She was given some paint which

Many commenters have encouraged Miss Erasmus for putting in so much effort. And we must agree, it looks great!

The young men at Northwood School got a huge surprise when Canadian celeb Drake shared their war cry cover of his song to 145 million followers.

Durban, South Africa (28 February 2024) – Northwood School shared their war cry cover of Drake’s song ‘Non-stop’ two weeks ago and this week, the Canadian musician shared the war cry cover on his Instagram stories to his 145 million followers. Within seconds, millions of people had seen the proudly South African school and it started trending.

Northwood School is a secondary school based in Durban North that has both day-to-day schooling and provides boarding for students from outside the Durban North area. The young men that enrol in the school have a large offering of education and sporting programmes.

This isn’t the first time a war cry has earned the school headlines. The entire school came together last year to sing Shosholoza for the Springboks. Armed with drums, their powerful voices and endless amounts of gees, the young men added their voices to the growing support for the Springboks.

The young men’s war cry has gone viral and it is not only giving international viewers a reason to smile, but the comment section of the video is filled with South Africans loving the unity and gees the video makes them feel.

This year, the school is celebrating its 75th Jubilee Year and if this is how its starting, we cannot wait to see what else is in store!

Join Reesa Teesa’s riveting journey through love, lies, and self-discovery in the viral sensation, ‘Who TF Did I Marry?’

Global (21 February 2024) – In a whirlwind of drama and revelation, a TikTok saga has taken the internet by storm, captivating audiences with its raw honesty and jaw-dropping twists. Dubbed “Who TF Did I Marry?”, this viral series unfolds the gripping tale of Reesa Teesa’s tumultuous journey through love, deceit, and ultimately self-discovery.

Reesa, a resilient soul from the Atlanta area, bravely chronicles her harrowing experience of being entangled with a “pathological liar,” whom she endearingly dubs “Legion” after the biblical tale of demons. With candour and courage, she peels back the layers of her past relationship, laying bare the shocking fabrications and heartaches woven into her once-promising romance.

“I’m going to tell the story of how I met, dated, married, and divorced a real pathological liar,” she said in the introductory video, sharing that she was going to be truthful, even if it makes her look bad.

But it didn’t (make her look bad) and it certainly didn’t disappoint. I have not stopped watching the videos and reading the comments for two days now, and I believe that this may be the best use of TikTok that I have ever seen. Reesa’s storytelling is completely captivating. In total, the “series” spans more than 10 hours – which includes an hour-long live chat. I have watched them all and it is WILD. I took Reesa everywhere with me – the office, the car and even the shower. I could not stop listening.

The saga begins innocently enough, as Reesa recounts her initial meeting with “Legion” through the digital maze of online dating in March 2020, just as the world plunged into the depths of a global pandemic. Their connection blossomed against the backdrop of uncertainty, with moments of genuine affection punctuated by grandiose tales spun by her enigmatic partner.

At the heart of “Who TF Did I Marry?” lies a narrative rife with betrayal and shattered illusions. “Legion” regaled Reesa with tales of wealth and success, weaving a labyrinth of lies that ensnared her in a web of deceit. From claims of being a former arena football player to purported roles at tech giant Apple and a condiment company, his fabrications knew no bounds. Yet, beneath the veneer of charm and charisma lay a dark truth that would unravel with devastating consequences. As Reesa delved deeper into the maze of her partner’s past, she unearthed a tangled web of falsehoods and deception. False identities, fabricated bank statements, and a trail of broken promises shattered the illusion of love, leaving her grappling with the harsh reality of betrayal.

But amid the wreckage of her shattered dreams, Reesa has found solace in the power of her own resilience. With unwavering resolve, she has emerged from the ashes of her failed marriage, her spirit unbroken and her voice unyielding. In sharing her story with the world, she imparts a powerful message of empowerment and awareness, urging others to heed the warning signs of deception and manipulation.

The series has racked up millions of views and also, in turn, gained millions of followers for Reesa. It’s “Tinder Swindler” for 2024 brought to you by a real human who we can all resonate with.

Through her journey of self-discovery, she shines a light on the enduring strength of the human spirit, reminding us all that even in our darkest moments, hope remains.
