Adam Levine whipped out a special phrase in Afrikaans for the locals in the audience at the Maroon 5 Concert in Cape Town, and no it’s not the phrase you’re thinking of:
Cape Town, South Africa (02 February 2024)—The Maroon 5 mission to South Africa had many locals buzzing this week as the concert drew closer and closer. From little fans like 6-year-old Jagger (yes, as in, ‘Moves Like Jagger’) to fandoms on the internet, the Calabash concert was shrouded in expectations.
But what many weren’t expecting, was lead singer Adam Levine to whip out a local language to address the audience!
While the guitar hummed in the background, Mr Levine prepared himself for his version of a prepared speech. Any non-native speaker who has ever had to stand up and speak Afrikaans in front of an audience can probably feel the second-hand anxiety from the moment. But the singer mustered up his courage and trekked on.
Explaining that Afrikaans is a “very difficult language”, he proceeded to explain that he asked his wife (the iconic Behati Prinsloo, who is Namibian) for some help on what to say.
While many eagerly awaited some of our spicer Afrikaans phrases that start with ‘jou ma se…’ Adam kept things clean and opted for a sweeter phrase instead—”Julle Lyk Baie Mooi”.
The lead added that ‘jy lyk baie mooi’ is something he says to his wife, which inspired him to share the love with the audience.

Many South Africans appreciated the effort, with some joking that “Charlize is not going to believe this” and others adding that his pronunciation was better than theirs in school.
Some opted to share that he could’ve gone for ‘hulle weet nie wat ons weet nie’ but locals know there’s more than enough of that phrase going around thanks to Dricus du Plesis’ recent historic victory.
