Stefanie Minnaar is celebrating the gift of being able to travel South Africa in an open letter, highlighting her journey from Gauteng to the Western Cape.

Cape Town, South Africa (12 December 2023) – Stefanie Minnaar is back sharing another beautifully worded piece, highlighting the good in South Africa. Having previously shared her night with a homeless man, this time her letter is showcasing the beauty of travelling in our own country.

We can often be left envious of the international destinations available but not really available, but right here in South Africa, there is so much beauty to behold and to celebrate.

Our beloved own country

By Stefanie Minnaar

I sometimes get depressed because I cannot afford to travel abroad. Then I reflect on what I have around me. I moved provinces five years ago (ex Gautenger who now lives in the Western Cape, but love the bushveld):

I love:

The dramatic colours of our sunsets that change to soft marshmallow just before the sunsets
A squirrel running across my wall with a baby on her back
The beauty of the West Coast flowers
Standing in Waenhuiskrans cave in awe of nature
Blue Cranes showing off in canola fields
Cheerful street sellers with colourful proteas and pincushions
The colourful houses in the Bo-Kaap
The breeze of the sea air as seagulls circle around
The tablecloth over Table Mountain when the wind blows
Earth angels with soup kitchens and the wonderful work that Gift of the Givers and other NGO’s do
The kindness of strangers to each other in times of need and hardship

I miss:

Pretoria’s jacarandas in October
A rapid thunderstorm in the late afternoon and rice ants bubbling up
The beauty of green wood hoepoe’s and a Piet- my -vrou’s call
A bushveld fire of hard coal wood in the Waterberg
Giraffe and zebra babies that look like stuffed toys
The smell of the veld just after it rained in the bushveld

I have travelled to a few countries abroad. Right now, I would much rather go to the places in our own country where I have never been. Our country is so diverse and just special.

Happy holidays, everyone.
