A team of mainly female patrollers are putting the work in to restore a sense of safety in Melville!

Melville, South Africa (03 March 2024) — When strong and determined women come together, incredible things can happen. Just think of South Africa’s incredible Black Mambas all-female ranger squad! In a different way and place, women are making a difference with the goal of bringing a sense of safety to Melville in mind. Initially, volunteers, these Community Blue Patrollers are giving their time to the suburb in a way that Joburg can be so proud of.

As vetted Community Policing Forum Patrollers, the Community Blue Patrollers know that change comes from being willing to do something about the ills that plague people—like crime.

Their function is to be the eyes and ears of parts of Melville who will report any behaviour that isn’t very ‘I Love Melville’ or illegal to the authorities.

“Their primary goal is to serve as a visible deterrent in the 7th Street and 4th Ave business areas, ensuring the safety of both staff and visitors,” shared the Melville Security Initiative.

“As the project expands, resources will be allocated to cover other critical areas, such as the main road and the Koppies project.”

The brave women reportedly share great pride in being able to help change Melville’s narrative around safety and began their activities on 1 February.

According to the Initiative, plans to get the lady’s office resources have been underway, with them extending the invitation to the larger Melville community to help with everything from a microwave to sugar and mugs.

The Blue Patrollers are one of many ways Melville and its people are working to uplift their historic suburb; with other ways focusing on beautifying the Joburg gem.
